GL Garrad Hassan North America is looking to recruit a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Engineer/Scientist for the Energy Group, responsible for leading the GL Garrad Hassan North American Energy team in the application of CFD and modeling to assess the wind resource and expected energy output of proposed utility-scale wind farms across the US, and to train others on CFD modeling techniques.
This position is based in GL Garrad Hassan North America's Portland, OR office, with the willingness and availability to travel up to 25% of the time for periods of a week at a time.

Duties: |
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
•(80%) Lead GL Garrad Hassan North American CFD modeling efforts:
oPerforming CFD modeling (CD-Adapco STAR-CCM+, Meteodyn, WindSim) of proposed and existing wind farm sites,
oCollaborating with international GL Garrad Hassan colleagues on the development/implementation of standard CFD modeling methods for GL Garrad Hassan North America,
oTraining GL Garrad Hassan North American Energy Group staff in the application of CFD modeling and project managing CFD projects within the Energy Group,
oResearching strengths/weaknesses of linear wind flow models (WAsP), numerical. weather prediction models, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models and CFD;
•(20%) Conduct long-term wind resource and energy production assessments:
oAnalyzing wind and other climatic data,
oInspecting sites and measurement equipment,
oPerforming wind flow modeling,
oAssessing site conditions for turbine suitability,
oPredicting wind farm energy production,
oConducting statistical uncertainty analyses,
oWriting technical reports and communicating results to clients.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Project management responsibilities of all CFD activities (commercial and R&D) in the North American market.

Qualifications: |
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
•Advanced knowledge of the wind energy production assessment methodology,
•General understanding of the North American wind energy market,
•Comprehensive understanding of wind flow principles,
•Proficiency in the statistical analysis of data,
•Proficiency with CFD codes (CD-Adapco STAR-CCM+, Meteodyn and WindSim) and GH WindFarmer and WAsP,
•Proficiency with MS Office and multiple programming languages,
•Knowledge of numerical weather prediction models (MM5, WRF),
•Understanding of wind energy industry measurement techniques and standards,
•Thorough knowledge of various mapping tools and map formats.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
•Ph.D. (preferred) or MS in fluid dynamics,
•3+ years of CFD experience,
•Knowledge of commercial CFD codes for the wind power industry (CD-Adapco STAR-CCM+, Meteodyn, WindSim) is preferred.
