Description: |
| Responsible for editing the most important stories of the day for use on a variety of platforms. Develops fascinating headlines to attract readers to content. Designs compelling pages with multiple layers that invite audience. Oversees various complex projects as a matter of course. |
Duties: |
Edits content from various sources to be consistent with its delivery platform in a timely and accurate manner. Works with journalists to clarify inconsistencies or eliminate confusion of content. May re-write short passages for greater clarity. Ensures final product is free of typos, grammatical errors and misspellings. Understands style rules of each delivery platform. Understands critical time issues/deadlines/speed to market.
Develop and construct creative, clever and fascinating headlines and/or pages for each platform, attempting to draw readers/viewers/listeners to content. Updates as required.
Advise originating journalists, editors or superiors on issues of completeness and fairness of content.
May supervise slot/desk on periodic basis as workload demands; may complete occasional shifts backing up supervisor.
Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications: |
College degree, with concentration in journalism, English, history or political science preferred.
5 years of copy editing experience or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree required.
Some experience as team leader of significant stories/content/projects or specialized expertise in technology or design preferred.
Strong typing skills
Strong technology skills, with knowledge of Quark, InDesign and Publicus.
Ability to produce sophisticated layouts incorporating photo cutouts, graphics, illustrations, etc.
Maintains strong knowledge of Gannett Tennessee communities. Ability to understand direction of content and be able to place it on appropriate platform(s). Excellent editing and proofreading skills. Ability to design headlines and/or pages that captivate reader/viewer/listener and entice them to continue on to content. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers who may be located at a different job site. Ability to mentor less-experienced staff in a positive manner.
