Description:

The person selected for this position will serve as the initial contact for all potential foreclosure clients.

Duties:

The Fair Housing Project (FHP) paralegal screens applicants to determine their eligibility for Legal Aid services, initially assesses their legal issues and checks for conflicts of interest. The paralegal also schedules intake appointments, and refers applicants whose incomes exceed Legal Aid income guidelines to Reduced Fee Panel attorneys, housing counselors or other community resources. The paralegal maintains call logs, case files and client data in the Legal Server database; drafts letters, pleadings and other documents; performs clerical/administrative tasks for foreclosure attorneys; and assists attorneys with outreach activities.

The work schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. — 5 p.m., with occasional evening or weekend work. Travel in Palm Beach County is required.

Qualifications:

* Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two-year college or accredited paralegal program, or at least one year of paralegal work experience and on-the-job training.
* Computer literate; proficient in Internet-based legal research and office software applications, including WordPerfect and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
* Proficient in spelling, punctuation, and grammar when drafting letters, memos, pleadings and other legal documents. Effective and excellent oral and written communication, organization and planning skills. Accurate when working with details.
* Ability to accept close supervision and instruction on legal issues, and maintain effective working relationships with other staff members.
* Ability to research, analyze and interpret information in order to accurately analyze clients’ legal issues.
* Ability to work independently (self-starter), and to effectively manage workflow and simultaneous projects.
* Must have a reliable vehicle and a valid Florida State drivers’ license with a satisfactory driving record and eligibility for coverage under any applicable agency insurance.
* Fluency in Spanish or Creole preferred.
