Floating Fuel Technician

Description:

A “Floater” is a person that may or may not have an assigned “home location.” Floaters travel on a regular basis to locations that need additional support during periods of increased production, labor shortages, vacation coverage, etc. Additionally, floaters are relied on heavily during the start-up process of new operations. In this scenario, the floaters will perform the work at the new operation while people are being hired. Once the new hires are in place, floaters will assist with training and orientation. Usually, the floater will have advance notice that their services are required at a specific location; however, there will be instances when they may have to leave on very short notice in an emergency situation. Extensive travel is required for extended periods of time.

The major objective of a DTL Fuel Tech is to safety load, haul and unload diesel fuel as requested by our customer(s) in accordance with Company and customer Standard Operating Procedures. Additionally, DTL Fuel Techs may be required to perform minor service work on locomotives, such as, topping off traction sand tanks, adding engine oil, coolant, evacuating toilets, cleaning locomotive cabs, etc.

Duties:

We expect that “Floaters” be the best of the best. They should be a positive advocate of the Company, safety and follow standard operating procedures 100% of the time without exception;
Commit to working in an occurrence free manner. Meaning no spills, no injuries and no property damage;
Receive and issue fuel by following Standard Operating Procedures 100% of the time – without exception;
Transfer fuel without spills using accepted spill prevention methods;
Perform all locomotive service tasks in accordance with the Locomotive Servicing Procedures;
Locomotive Service may include:
- Inspecting and replacing worn brake shoes;
- Checking, and if necessary, adding lube oil, cooling water and crank case oil to the locomotive;
- Check, and if necessary, adding traction sand to the locomotive sand hoppers;
- Cleaning the locomotive cab, removing trash, restocking crew supplies and toilet evacuation;
Respond to dispatches in a timely manner;
Complete all administrative paperwork accurately, completely and in a timely manner;
Understand and use the Eagle Eye system where appropriate;
Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required 100% of the time;
Conduct comprehensive pre and post shift vehicle and equipment inspections;
Report incidents (operational and/or safety related), as instructed, in a timely manner;
Use Blue Flag protection and follow all customer safety rules and regulations at all times;
Control, contain and report any spill in accordance with Company Spill Reporting procedures;
Maintain accurate Hours of Service logs and/or time sheets and submit them in a timely manner;
Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the vehicles and equipment as able and/or qualified;
Commit to following Savage’s standards of Professionalism and Cleanliness;
Commit to be a reliable, safe and positive team member;
Other duties as assigned by divisional management;

Interface With The Rest Of The Company:

This position will travel extensively throughout the SQRS system, helping out whenever and wherever needed. They will report to one Regional Manager who will give them their assignments and supervise their activities. Consequently, they will interact with many different members of the SQRS family.

It is imperative that these individuals conduct themselves professionally at all times and in all locations while they are representing Savage Services.

Ideally, floaters will also be trained as Safety Specialists.

Qualifications:

Skills And Abilities:
Must have a Class A CDL with hazardous materials and tanker endorsements;
Must be able to clear all background checks required by the Company, customer and government;
Individuals are responsible for maintaining all required licenses and certifications in a current and valid status at all times;
Must be a problem solver and decision maker. In this role, floaters encounter many different and unique situations – they need to be able to figure things out and get the job done safely and efficiently;
Must know when to ask for help, there’s no shame in asking for help;
Must be able to read, write and understand English;
Must be self directed and able to work with little to no supervision;
Must be reliable and dependable;
Must know when to ask for help;
Moderate computer skills are required;
Must be able to work independently and with minimal supervision;
Should be willing to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. Shifts may rotate;
Must embrace change. The life of a floater is different every day, people who like a routine will not do well in this role;

Physical And Environmental Issues:

Air travel will be required on occasion, people in this position should not be afraid to fly;
This position is required to work outdoors in all kinds of weather conditions;
Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds on an occasional basis;
Must be able to climb steps and ladders;
Should be comfortable with heights; will have to access the top of trailers and equipment as necessary;
Work schedules will vary from day to day, depending on train schedules. Some days may be very busy and others may be very slow;
